Johnston family


The estate was bought by John Johnston, also a businessman with interests in the West Indies. He built an orangery in the gardens and a Gothic thatched cottage in the grounds. He died in 1828 and his widow died in 1860: at the same date his daughter Sarah painted a series of watercolours, now on display in the house, which give an invaluable picture of the house before the remodelling of the next owner.
